Mustang is an isolated region of Nepal preserving a rich Tibetan culture. The isolated region was entirely closed to trekking until 1992, but today with a special permit one can know trek all the way from Jomsom to Lo Manthang. The ancient fortified city of Lo Manthang, ancient monasteries and Buddhist cave paintings attract trekkers to this arid and picturesque region. A shorter trek that does not require an expensive permit is the traditional pilgrimage to Muktinath a sacred temple which lies at the foot of the Throng La Pass.
