Restricted Areas and Inner Line Permits in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal is situated in the heart of western Himalayas. The state is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir in the North, and Uttar Pradesh in the South-East. Haryana is in the South and Punjab is in the West. This popular Himalayan state is blessed with some of the most spectacular and beautiful places that offers lofty snow peaks, deep gorges, lush green valleys, fast flowing rivers, enchanting mountain lakes, flower bedecked meadows, beautiful temples and monasteries. Here one can indulge apart of relaxing, in sightseeing, trekking, mountaineering, fishing, Para-gliding, skiing, ice skating and golf.

Apart of the natural beauty Himachal holds there are few certain areas and regions here which are closed for the tourists or are very sensitive political borders. Special Permits are mandatory to take to visit the restricted and inner line areas in Himachal Pradesh which includes:


  1. Poo-Khab-Sumdho-Dhankar-Tabo Gompa-Kaza circuit
  2. Morang-Dabling circuit

The District Magistrate and Director General of Police of the state are entitled to accord these permits. Apart from the regular channels listed above, Special Commissioner (Tourism) and Resident Commissioner, Government of Himachal Pradesh, Himachal Bhawan, New Delhi also grants these permits. Individual tourists are not allowed to travel to these areas. Special permits are required for trekking only.
