Famous Himalayan Rivers

The Himalayan Mountain Range is the birthplace of many important rivers. Himalayan Rivers are the major source of life in countries like India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Myanmar and Tibet. These rivers add to the scenic beauty of the Himalayas and helps in the irrigation process and formation of the forest belt.

Listed below are the Major Rivers in Himalaya

Jhelum River – Located about 80 km south of Srinagar, Jhelum River originates from a spring called Verinag. The Jhelum is a very wide river that flows through Srinagar and is famous throughout the world for its pictorial beauty and nine bridges.

Chenab River - Located in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh, Chenab River originates from the snows found at the foot of the main range of Himalaya in the Spiti and Lahaul district. Chenab River is formed by the merging of Chandra and Bhaga Rivers.

Ganga River - Originating from Gangotri Glacier which is located at about 14,000 ft on the foothills of the Himalayas, Ganga River is considered as the holiest river of India. At the town of Devprayag, Bhagirathi River is joined by Alaknanda Rivers to form river Ganga.

Brahmaputra River – Regarded as one of the greatest rivers in Asia, Brahmaputra River travels around 3000 km from the slopes of Kailash in western Tibet to the Bay of Bengal.


Yamuna River – Originating from the Bundar Poonch glaciers located in the district of Uttarkashi of the state of Uttaranchal, Yamuna River flows towards the south direction through the Himalayan foothills and onto the plains of north India along the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana State border.
