We take a short break after a ride of 70 KMs for breakfast at Tumkur, town famous for growing coconuts, millets, rice, pulses, arecanut and oil seeds. We will reach Chitradurga around 10am. Chitradurga is an ancient town and was part of the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka the Great, in the 3rd century BC. Chitradurga Fort covers an area of 1500 acres and its walls cover a distance of 8 KMs. The fort wasbuit in stages between 14th and 18th centuries by different dynasties like the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas and Nayaks. It is a fascinating experience to explore this fort with its seven concentric fortification walls, 19 gateways, 38 posterior entrances, 35 secret pathways, four invisible passages, water tanks and 2000 watch towers! Post lunch, we ride 143 KMs to reach Hampi by 430 pm. Overnight stay is at Hampi.

Day 2

After breakfast, we will visit the magnificent Virupaksha temple It is from the Hoysala period and is the oldest temple in Hampi. The temple tower has eleven storeys and goes up 165 ft in height. The river Tungabhadra flows inside through a canal.

King’s Balance is the next destination. This is a huge stone frame east of PurandaraMantapa. A stone beam is placed on two pillars of stone. Legend has it that the generous Kings of Vijayanagara used to weigh them with gold and gems and distribute it among the poor.

VijayaVittala temple is probably the grandest masterpiece around. It is constructed on a polyhedron foundation. Right at the front is the world renowned stone chariot made of rough quartz. You will spot figures of soldiers, hunters and even foreign visitors like Portuguese and Arabs etched on the chariot. The musical pillars of the temple are probably one of the greatest work of art by mankind.

BadaviLinga is the biggest of all lingas in Hampi. It is made of black stone and rises 12 feet in height. A canal passes through it and hence it’s always in water.

You can find the biggest idol of Hampi, a few feet from BadaviLinga. UgraNarasimha is 22 feet in height and was carved by a Brahmin during Krishnadevaraya’s time. There is a serpent with open hood at the back of the head

Day 3

After an early breakfast we visit Anjanadri hill, the birth place of Lord Hanuman. A guide will show us where all the key events of Ramayana happened at Kishkinda. He will tell us stories and legends pertaining to the places we visit. In fact it is here at Rishyamukha hills that Lord Rama meets Hanuman for the first time as he is looking for his kidnapped wife, Sita. Pampa Sarovara is another highlight of this tour where Rama met the old woman Shabari who advised him to seek Hanuman. We will also see the legendary Sugreeva’s cave where an interesting episode happened in Ramayana which altered the course of events to follow.
