Dolpo is an isolated high altitude region of Nepal which lies in the rain shadow of the giant peak of Dhaulagiri (8,172 meters). The region has a rich cultural tradition of trade and the people of Dolpa are followers of Bon a religion which predates Buddhism but now accepted as the fifth school of Tibetan Buddhism. Trekking options include Phoksundo Lake the deepest in Nepal and the more remote Shey Gompa established in the 11th century. Shey Phoksundo National Park is famous for its wildlife and its likely to sight Blue Sheep and in rare cases a Snow Leopard.
